Previously, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the fields of political economy and economic history at NYU Abu Dhabi with Bob Allen. I completed my PhD on the economics of nationalism at Humboldt University of Berlin in 2015 under the supervision of Nikolaus Wolf. I spent the Spring semester of 2014 in the US doing research at UC Berkeley’s Economic History Lab.
I believe academic research benefits from practical experience. For the first three years of my PhD, I concurrently worked at the German Institute of Economic Research’s policy consultancy firm on energy markets and environmental sustainability issues in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Before starting my PhD I worked at various organizations and government agencies in Germany, the UK, Georgia, and Russia.
Like Humboldt University’s founder Wilhelm von Humboldt did 200 years ago, I also believe that a simultaneous relationship exists between doing relevant research and providing effective teaching. This is also my guiding philosophy as Director of the MSc-programme in economics at Trinity.
